The Hospices de Beaune is one of the premium wine estates in the world encompassing approximately 60 hectares. As an indicator of the high quality of this French vineyard, almost 85% of the estate are in premiers crus and grands crus areas. The wines of the Hospices de Beaune (sometimes referred to as cuvées) normally bear the name of the original family who donated the plots of vines whose grapes comprise the wine. This naming tradition dates all the way back to 1457, when Jean Guillotte le Verrier donated vines to the Hôtel-Dieu built by Nicolas Rolin in Beaune in 1443. As an environmentally responsible operation, the vineyards at Hospices de Beaune have been cultivated taking a sustainable / organic approach with no chemical inputs. The 2018 Volnay Premier Cru Cuvee Coche-Dury edition is known as a particularly excellent year for their historic wines. This burgundy wine, which is normally reserved for very special occasions, pairs amazingly well with ham, lasagna, and veal.
