Domaine Faiveley History

The Faiveley family’s relationship with wine is an enduring tale, woven intricately into their family legacy. For almost two centuries, their ties to Bourgogne, its rich history, and vibrant culture have remained unbreakable. A legacy of seven generations has upheld values that are grounded in a connection to the region, passion for the terroirs, and respect for the collective efforts that bring its essence to life.

In 1825, Pierre Faiveley, a native of Nuits-St.-Georges, laid the foundation for Domaine Faiveley. He passed the torch to his nephew Joseph in 1860, who acquired Corton Clos des Corton, an exclusive grand cru “monopole” vineyard. Joseph’s visionary spirit forged Domaine Faiveley into an enduring legacy for the five generations to follow. In the aftermath of Joseph’s passing, the domaine weathered immense challenges, from the plague of phylloxera to the economic crisis. Through it all, each iteration of the Faiveley lineage remained steadfast, preserving the familial traditions and the ancestral heritage entwined not just within the vineyards, but throughout time itself.

Today, their stature as one of Burgundy’s largest landholders persists, with their holdings spanning from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte Chalonnaise. The stewardship of the estate now rests in the capable hands of siblings Erwan and Eve Faiveley. Guided by their expertise and leadership, Domaine Faiveley proudly presents collectible red and white wines that consistently garner exceptional accolades.

Terroir

At the heart of Domaine Faiveley’s wine-making philosophy lies an unwavering dedication to honoring their terroirs. Nestled in the charming village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France, Domaine Faiveley’s vineyards sprawl across renowned Cru appellations, including Cote Chalonnaise, Cote de Beaune, and Cote de Nuits. Within these revered landscapes, the estate’s commitment to terroir-driven wine making comes vividly to life, through all of the following hard-working steps:

  • Local Sourcing and Craftsmanship: Meticulous sourcing of regional materials and collaboration with local artisans who know the region better than anyone.
  • Sustainable Fertilization: Harnessing natural resources, they ensure vineyards thrive while preserving ecosystem balance.
  • Thoughtful Vinification and Aging: Sustainable methods, like traditional aging and natural vinification, uphold the land’s integrity in every bottle.
  • Water Recycling: Water recycling for bottle rinsing reduces environmental footprint and underscores holistic sustainability.
  • Sustainable Location: Four viticultural warehouses are located near the vineyards to enhance efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Individualized Plots: Individualized plots allow for high-quality yields and accurate work in each unique plot.
  • Preserving Soil Vitality: Extracting minerals from the soil safeguards the soil’s microbial life.

Domaine Faiveley’s respect for terroir stands as a testament to their unyielding commitment to nature’s influence. With each sip of their wines, one experiences not just the flavors of the grape but the very essence of the land that thoughtfully nurtured it.

Difference between Domaine Faiveley and Joseph Faiveley

With a shared surname embedded in their titles, it’s not surprising that these two wines, Domaine Faiveley and Joseph Faiveley, often encounter confusion. However, this connection is far from coincidental; in fact, they are intertwined labels rooted in familial ties. The bulk of Domaine Faiveley’s wines stem from the estate’s own vineyards. Leveraging strong affiliations with fellow Burgundian vintner families in the vicinity, Domaine Faiveley generously grants access to their prime vineyard plots. The grapes, treated with the same meticulous care as those used for Domaine Faiveley wines, are vinified under a distinct nomenclature.
On the other hand, Joseph Faiveley operates as a négociant, functioning as a wine merchant who procures grapes directly from Domaine Faiveley. The Joseph Faiveley brand epitomizes the second generation of a family winemaking tradition that has flourished for more than two centuries, spanning 200 years.
